ADHD - help/advice?

BlueIced asked:

I’m 20 years old and although this question may seem a little, ‘im to old’ i’m still asking it.
Of course it started in my childhood, all the signs. My parents are a little old fashioned and didn’t realise the effect of ADHD growing up, without treatment. Sort of the brush it off, medication is only if you have an infection or..You get my point?
Now i’m 20 im understanding more how this has effected my life, To low grades to jumping to one job to the other.
Im never settled. Now I have a job,and its getting to the point where my ADHD is annoying me.I love my job but always am unsettled and always getting shouted at for my attention span and hyperness.
I would like to go to the doctor and see if he can recomend anything. Although im doubtful because i am 20, Its not that this ADHD has just come on, Its now that im understanding and wanting to do something about this.
Because im 20, Will something be done? or Brushed under the table filled with excuses.
Sorry its long thankyou
Thanks for the info, more needed if anyone has experience.
To be honest i feel somewhat bad, going to the doctors if i don’t have a leg hanging off me. LOL. I know its there job, maybe its my doctor whom im not comfy with. I remember getting my tonsils removed, Random. It took my doctors some what over 6 months and over 20 visits. They just seemed to give me meds which helped for a week then back to the same problem.
I will make an appointment;

Does anyone know the best way to word it, I dont want him to think, I’ve read something online…Im getting paranoid about it. I know some people are like that and because im now 20 he may think because it wasnt treated at a young age…Im getting paranoid. I am a paranoid person anyways, which i think is down to the ADHD also. Ahhh, well thanks for the info guys.

adhd treatment
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and it is a chronic condition that can have a great impact on a child if a child does not get help, or if the right ADHD treatment is not prescribed.

Some of the most common symptoms of ADHD are impulsivity, inappropriate behavior, and hyperactivity. These children have difficulty staying on task and completing projects, which if not identified and treated early can be a huge barrier throughout the school years and eventually on the job. Before there was a diagnosis, these children were just seen as having lots of energy, or were just wild and always getting into trouble. Now that ADHD treatments are available, parents have the option of getting their child help so that they can be more productive in school and have fewer disruptions at home.

Not all parents and professionals agree on what type of ADHD treatment is the best, or if it should be used at all. Some parents feel that it is unnatural to treat a child with prescription medication that could have significant side effects, or otherwise harm the child. Side effects are dose dependent and can be lessened by reducing the dosage or switching to a different medication. Many times behavior modification therapy is not effective on its own, which is why ADHD treatment usually requires use of a stimulant drug. Stimulants have a paradoxical effect on children; these drugs do not increase hyperactivity, which is a normal response in adults, but help the child focus, control behaviors, and improve self-esteem. Stimulants used in ADHD treatment help children to complete tasks, learn more efficiently, and interact more positively with their peers.

Physicians and psychiatrists develop individualized ADHD treatments for each child, because not all experience the same symptoms or have the same level of severity. There can also be other conditions that are present as well, such as mental or physical disorders that need to be addressed in addition to ADHD treatment. Such conditions may have a great impact on how the child responds to therapy, and if not treated simultaneously will tend to slow down progress. There are a number of sites on the internet that discuss ADHD, the symptoms, and how to go about getting help for your child. ADHD treatments and the controversies surrounding them are also discussed in depth. If you suspect your child has ADHD have him or her evaluated by a professional as soon as possible, so that your child can get the treatment he or she needs.

ADHD Treatment: What Are the Goals?

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Do you know what you’re hoping to get out of your ADHD child’s treatment? Do you have a treatment plan that shows you how and why you’re working on a specific ADHD problem?

There are several important goals to strive for in ADHD treatment. Here are a few.

1. You want to help your ADHD child feel better about himself. Having ADHD is hard. It feels awful to be “different,” and ADHD is about as different as you can get without having some noticeable physical difference.

2. You want to help your ADHD child do better in school. Most ADHD kids are very bright, and most ADHD kids are underachievers. I know I was, and my son is.

3. You want to help your ADHD child follow home and classroom rules. Being in trouble all the time is a part of ADHD, and we all know being in trouble feels miserable.

4. You want to help your ADHD child make more friends. Social skills are difficult for kids with ADHD, and they’re often lonely. Just making one or two good friends can make a world of difference.

5. You want to reduce the ADHD behaviors that cause problems. This goes back to following home and classroom rules, but it’s more than that. You want to help your ADHD child get along in the world, because it’s the only world he has to live in, ADHD or not.

If you can reach these goals in your ADHD treatment plan, you’ll be on your way to helping your ADHD child live a happier, more successful life.
