Don't blame yourself - that won't help your son! I took my son to his pediatrician and they recommended a good doctor to meet with. They did a series of different tests and I had to complete surveys and so did his teacher on his behavior. After over a month of testing they brought out the charts and he was diagnosed with severe ADHD. He was always a smart kid and a GOOD kid...he just needed help with his impulses and concentration. We did decide to put him on meds...it took a couple different types of meds to find the right one with the least side effects. So it definitely takes some time - it won't be a magical overnight fix. He's on strattera now and doing AWESOME in school - no more behavior problems or those dreaded phone calls from the principal's office. By the way, we waited until he was almost 8 before we get him tested. We tried disciplining him...taking his video games away...taking away TV prvileges...none of that worked. Now it's not a stuggle to get thru his homework or to sit and watch a movie. He is relaxed and can concentrate!

Good luck!

Get a physician that will work with you and listen. Meet with principal and teachers and keep in close contact with them. My son was diagnosed and first thing they yelled was Ritalin and I refused. It was a lot of work but if you have time to work with him and check labels on food, eliminate sugar, etc. You can find the list of what can be eliminated that helps them from a nutritionist or online. I am glad I put in the extra time and didn't medicate, but that has to be up to you. He will grow up and be fine, don't worry or label him.

A lot of research has ben done lately on ADHD. They are linking many foods to aggravating the effects of ADHD. Red food colouring, sulfates, nitrates, artificial sweetener ETC. I have seen good results with ADHD kids when something as simple as their diet is changed. It does no good to blame yourself life happens just do what you can to help your little boy as much as possible. Know that there are other parents out there who know what you are going through you are not alone.

Placing blame does not help him, which I'm sure is your biggest wish.

I also have an AD-HD son. I knew he was different at the age your son is now. I joined an AD-HD support group online and it's been great for support and information. As your son starts school you need to know his rights. And you need to know what to do to support him and to survive as his mother!

When my son was diagnosed I had the courage to deal with my own AD-HD. I am so glad I did!
Medication is for the brain, like prescription eye glasses are for the sight.
