I have a 12 year old ADHD child who is on Adderall. He gets up almost every night and gets into things, like eating and hiding it, or breaking his brother’s stuff. His doctor told me to try melatonin and that is not helping. I have 4 children and he is the only one with ADHD and I am at a total loss with this kid. Any advice from other ADHD parents or people that understand this frustration I would love and appreciate some help.

And for anyone who says its disipline, its not trust me, we have tried everything, and like I said I have 3 other children and if it was disipline I would be having these problems with all of them and I am not.

Just got the diagnosis. My child is ADHD I need advice?

I have a book I’m reading that was given my another parent I found parenting classes once a week for children with ADHD, and he has a medical doctor visit Monday to discuss possiable medicine to prescribe for him …. Is there anything I need to know … What peice of advice do you wish YOU knew in the begining???
And he is getting counseling for anger and other issues … He is 7 yrs old.
I’ve read through some of your answers and here’s some extra info … We don’t have much sugar… our idea of candy is yogurt cover rasins and to drick is water …. or milk … and on special occasions Juicy juice. I learn when he was about 2 that he gets very hyper very quickly and we cut out as many sugars as p[ossiable as well as a great amount of starches. He has had a Therapists for the last two years and we have moved to another one who so called “specialized” in his feild … whatever feild they seem to place him in but the previous one also felt he was ADD and possiabbly ADHD … I don’t completly agree he is ADHD but ADD yes … I see his face to stuggle with focusing … I wipe his tears when he freels “stuipid” He hates sports because he can’t focus on them it’s not involved enough… Video games he loves but I **** them, he is restricted to V-tech learning games. Myself my husband his teacher my grandmother his father his paternal grandmother all filled out 2 sets of ?s

My 6 almost 7 year old first grader was resently tested for adhd. He is going back for his second test tomarrow. The plan is to give him one pill of ridalin 90min before to see if he does better, if so they will prescribe him some medicine. Well my worry is that I’ve heard some scarry stuff about this kind of meds. Are there any parents who have an adhd child, that have any dos or don’ts with this type of medicine?

Any advice for teaching ADHD/ ADD students?

Hi teachers, I just found out this week that I have two new students coming in next year with ADHD and ADD. I teach a multi-grade classroom (5th and 6th grades) in a small private school. I must follow a strict schedule to get the subject matter taught to both grades every day. The students have time every day to get their “seatwork” done …. writing, spelling list, etc… while I am teaching the other grade. The parents of these new students seem to think there will be no problems — one is on medication — I don’t know what to think. One is coming from another school, one is coming from home school. What is important for me to know? Where is the best place for them to sit in the classroom? How do I find a course or class on this, that I can take this summer to learn about this? I have no training nor experience with ADHD, and right now I feel overwhelmed. Thanks for any advice you have.

I have a 7 and 6 yr old who both were diagnosed with ADHD. My 1 yr old is showing no signs of it, but does imitate their behavior of course. Medication helps the 6 yr old, but the 7 yr old has not done well with medication and is no longer on it. Dealing with them each day and fighting over the same basic things that we were told would be good for them to do, (cleaning room, getting dressed, brushing teeth) always results in arguments. What works to get them to do these simple tasks without arguments, or dramatic screeches and groans?
I need to add that I would never put a 1 year old who does not show signs of any problem whatsoever on any type of medication. It is a necessity to prevent my 6 year old from harming both himself and other people as he was throwing desks and chairs at people and windows while in school. I have sat and argued with doctors about the dosage, etc to prevent either one of them from being overdosed or being placed on something that is not helping them. I removed my 7 yr old from all medication because 1)it had no effect and 2)made him ill and I refuse to allow him to be on any other types of medication. There is a possibility that the 6 yr old is also bi-polar and in that case will obviously need the help he can recieve. In extreme cases medication is a necessity simply to help a child function on a day to day basis. Their behavior is NOT normal, and therefore cannot be dealt with in a normal way. There are however simple ways of diverting them into these every day activities. Advice?
